Earliest meeting: Saturday 5th February 1732
Final meeting: Saturday 5th February 1732
The small County Durham market town of Wolsingham is located by the River Wear in Weardale, between Stanhope and Crook. In 1615 the town was granted a market and was given a piece of land on which to hold fairs and markets. Maybe that was the scene of Wolsingham races which were staged on Saturday 5th February 1732 when the principal race was won by the Reverend M Tarran's bay horse who won all 3 heats but lost the race because his rider was unable to draw the correct weight at the weigh-in. Three of its oldest houses were converted into an Inn named the Pack Horse Inn where it is believed that Edward III stayed in April 1327 on his journey from Scotland. Another Royal connection was with King Charles II who is said to have ridden his horse up the staircase on the inside of the Pack Horse Inn.
